The Crucible Quick Start

The Crucible is VALIS's continuous, Elo-style ranked ladder: post or accept a match request, play the match, and climb the regional standings. Here's how to get going in five steps.

The short version
  1. Make an account
  2. Set your display name to exactly match your gamertag
  3. Create or join a Crucible team
  4. Post or accept a match request
  5. Report the score in the match chat and climb

Create your account

  1. Go to valis.gg and click Sign In (top-right).
  2. Choose how to sign up: Continue with Discord (fastest), or the Register tab (display name, email, password). If you register by email, verify your email address, then link your Discord under My Account so you're pinged in the VALIS Discord when one of your matches is accepted.
  3. (Recommended) Turn on 2FA under My Account → Security.
✓ Done — you have a VALIS account.

Set your display name to your gamertag

The Crucible has no console linking, so your display name is your identity in matches, so it must exactly match your Xbox or PlayStation gamertag (capitalization, spacing, numbers, and special characters all count). Set it under My Account. You can also set a preferred region there, but it's only a profile marker: your Crucible team's region decides where you play.

You can change your display name once every 14 days. If your gamertag changes sooner, contact staff at competitive@valis.gg or in the Discord.

Create or join a Crucible team

The Crucible is team-based, and teams are created on the site.

  • Start a team: open Crucible Teams for your region (NA or EU) and click + Create a Crucible Team. Choose a name (2 to 24 characters) and pick NA, EU or Both; Both creates one team in each region. You need Discord linked or a verified email. Staff review the request, and you can follow it under Requests on your Account page. Once it's approved, the team joins the ladder at 1000 CR, appears under My Crucible Teams in your account menu, and you are its captain.
  • Build your roster: players request to join from your team page, and you approve them under Pending Requests. Approve as Captain also makes them a captain. A team can have up to 3 captains and 20 members, and you can close applications at any time. Your whole roster doesn't need to join: only the players who post or accept match requests or use the match chat.
  • Join a team: open the team's page and click Request to Join. One of its captains approves you.
You can be on one Crucible team per region. To play EU matches as well as NA ones, you need an EU team too.

Post or accept a match request

  1. Only captains can post or accept match requests. Click + Post a Match Request on The Crucible page, the Match Requests page or your team page, then choose the region, format (BO3 to BO11), date and time (entered in your own time zone), ruleset, and ranked (counts toward CR) or casual. Each team has 3 request slots.
  2. Or open Match Requests and accept one posted by another team in your region.
  3. When a request is accepted, both rosters get a live match chat to sort out the details, and both teams' captains are pinged in the VALIS Discord if their Discord is linked. Play the match following the Crucible Guidelines.
✓ Done — match set up and played.

Report the result and climb

  1. When the series ends, any player on either team opens the match chat and reports the final score from Options → Report Match (for example 3–1 in a BO5).
  2. The other team confirms it: a captain of that team for a ranked match, or any of its players for a casual one. That completes the match: a ranked result updates both teams' CR straight away, and the match moves to Completed Matches on both team pages.
  3. If the teams can't agree, or a ruling is needed, use Need Staff in the same menu.
